Stefan Antonov Sofiyanski was born on 7 November 1951 in Sofia. 1974 - he graduated in statistics from the Karl Marx Higher Institute of Economics (now University of National and World Economy). 1973 - 1975 - he worked as economist at the Research, Analyses, and Reports Directorate with the Ministry of Communications and Information. 1975 - 1991 - economist at the Centre of Computerization of Construction and the Building Industry; 1st degree research associate. Sofiyanski held also positions at the Ministry of Information and Communications, the Institute of Economics, Information and Management, and the Democracy Agency.

1991 - 1993 - president of the Committee of Posts and Telecommunications under the Philip Dimitrov cabinet of the
UDF.
In late 1993 he was elected deputy chairman of the National Co-ordinating Committee of the UDF in charge of domestic policy.
1994 - deputy to the 37th National Assembly, elected from the UDF.
1995 - deputy chairman of the Budget and Finance Committee; member of the permanent delegation of the National Assembly for contacts with the European Parliament.
Member of the Economic Affairs Committee; elected Mayor of Sofia and withdrawn as deputy.
In 1997 he served as prime minister of the caretaker cabinet appointed by president Stoyanov.
Leader of the  United Christian Democratic Centre  since 15-16 May 1993.
On 2 June 1998, by a resolution of the National Executive Council of the UDF, Sofiyanski was nominated representive the UDF in the Media Committee of the European Democratic Union.
1998 - elected vice-president of the European Association of Local and Regional Policy at the Innsbruck Congress held on 4 July 1998.
9 December 2001 - the Free Democrats Alliance was founded and Sofianski was elected leader of the new party.

July 2005 - elected deputy to the 40th National assembly, from the Bulgarian National Union coalition (Free Democrats Alliance, IMRO and BZNS - People's Union).

Married, with three daughters.
Language proficiency in English and German.
