In 1972 he graduated from the Law Department of the Kliment Ohridski University in Sofia. 1989 - specialization in civil law. Until 1992 Stoyanov practised as lawyer in Plovdiv. 1989 - he joined the Club for Glasnost and Democracy; member of the UDF since the first day of the coalition. 1990 -1991 - member and spokesman of the Plovdiv organization of the UDF during the elections for the 7th Grand National Assembly and for the 36th National Assembly. 1992 -1993 - deputy minister of Justice in the UDF-formed cabinet headed by Philip Dimitrov. 1993 - deputy leader of the National Club for Democracy. 1995 - deputy leader of the UDF coalition. Deputy chair of the UDF parliamentary group in the 37th National Assembly. At the 8th National Conference of the UDF held in March 1996, Petar Stoyanov won the primaries and was nominated for running in the presidential election. 3 March 1996 - 2001 - President of the Republic of Bulgaria.
