The bottom step is the highest one. Every next step is shorter. Stone lions are said to have stood on the pedestals flanking the stairs, but they have been stolen by treasure-hunters.

The Mount Seen at Close Quarters

The elevation presented in the picture is an ancient Thracian mound situated near the village of Starosel, Plovdiv region. It was unearthed in 2000.

The Starosel  tumulus is the largest known so far. Presumably, it dates from the 4-5 centuries B.C.

The Thracian mounds in Bulgaria (commonly of modest size) number some 60 000. Although not all of them have been studied, the archaeological finds provide ample evidence of Bulgaria's Thracian heritage.

Thracian tumuli are linked with Thracian state formations the origins of which dwindle away into the remotest millennia of  prehistory.

2000

Today, year 2011, the excavations and the public access to the site have  changed a lot.
