THE ROCK
This is how the rock into which the tombs have been cut looks like when viewed at a close distance. Time has erased, at least to my inexperienced eye, the traces of the instruments used. I presume, however, that it has been dug up by hand. It must have taken much strength, time, and skill to dig even a single chamber. From what has been found there, archeologists judge that these chambers have served as resting places of "ordinary" people too.
Should one decide today to have this sort of thing dug up, he would have to pay a price exceeding by far the cost of a new Mercedes.
